"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your Eyes Turned Skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."
I’ve been completely overwhelmed with school work. I promise i’ll be posting as normal very soon!
The Galaxy’s Largest Diamond.
BPM 37093 is a white dwarf star, found around 50 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Centaurus. It is a similar size to our own Sun, and is primarily composed of oxygen and carbon. In fact, the inside of this white dwarf is believed to be pure carbon, and so the pressure in the star has caused the carbon to accumulate and form a diamond centre. BPM 37093 is really just a giant cosmic diamond! Not only that, but a 10 billion trillion, trillion carat cosmic diamond! The star is better known as Lucy, after it was named in tribute to The Beatle’s single, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”.
Astronomers actually expect our own Sun will become a white dwarf when it dies too. But don’t worry - that’s almost 5 billion years from now. Then, after a further 2 billion years, the Sun’s core will crystallise too, creating a giant diamond in the centre of the solar system. Huh, diamonds really are forever!
